Suitcase, Omphalos

There is a hole in the night

into which my grandfather packs a suitcase

and says hurry

it is time to leave this country,

where my sister sleeps with her daughter in a small bed

next to an enormous bottle of nail polish remover,

a hole before which I awaken at 2 am and run

my hands along the counter, famished

for a country without a suitcase,

a hole in the night and my grandfather says it is time

pack up now.

He buttons shoes and coat, a small man

only the size of the dime

I put in my pocket

for some long delayed telephone call

into the natal country of rain and pine trees.

He dreams of rain

and there is a hole in the night

through which rain falls

where my body is not my body

but only belongs to my son

to whom I gave birth with such suffering

the horizon contracted

and I named him for his father’s father

in the manner of the Greeks.

A hole in the night where Delphi once waited,

axioms and prophecies:

a ruined unimpressive temple, small round stutter of stones,

a crack in the earth, the side of the mountain for visions,

so much less impressive than the trees

where we wandered in the woods

looking for the button of the world, two stones

carried by two ravens. Here they meet.

So often these days I do not know myself. I mean

there is a hole in the night

through which I address you

with words carried

in the manner of ravens carrying stones.
